I watched you race the shade today
and shake an angry fist at the clouds
because you couldn't keep your footing
because sunshine was all you had left
is there more to daylight?
of golden rays on golden skin
and what is there of darkness?
a place for the spiders to hide
spinning webs that will only glisten
when the sun wakes up and hits them
just right
Onto carousels and around you go
off onto dizzy feet that can now
barely hold your weight
and you can barely call them your own
Yes, I watched you race the shadows
I watched you run, and run, and run
and I saw you struggle on your unsteady feet
only to fall into step with the night
and when I offered my hand for you to hold
you fell to your knees, head lowered in shame
and you told of how you could spin no webs
for the sun to be proud when the morning came
